If you’ve been working with crystals for a while and have collected a large amount of them, learning how to create a crystal grid is your natural next step. Everything vibrates at a certain frequency. The vibrations of crystals are thought to be healing to the mind and the spirit. Arranging them into a geometric pattern combines their healing energy with the power of sacred geometry and strengthens the properties of the individual crystals. We work with the energy of the crystals by charging them with our intention, using their vibrations to help us achieve a specific goal. Using patterns to direct the energy amplifies the intention you set for your grid.
If you’ve seen pictures of beautiful, extravagant, intricately designed crystal grids online, you may think you need to have a lot of crystals to make your own. But even if you only have a few of the same variety of crystals, you can create your own crystal grid. The size doesn’t matter, mixing large rough stones, medium tumbled stones, or small crystal chips produces the same result.
Planning Your Personalized Crystal Grid
A common number of the same crystal type to choose is four to represent the four directions. You may choose to use no more than three different varieties of crystals in your grid, so the energy doesn’t get muddy. Like mixing paint, if you combine too many colors you end up with brown. The same is true for creating intention with a crystal grid to manifest your desire. Less is more in this case!
There are two crystals that won’t muddy the energy and instead benefit the crystals around them, and those are selenite and clear quartz. These crystals also don’t need to be cleansed because they are self-cleansing. Selenite, especially in the shape of a wand, and clear quartz, especially in the shape of a point, enhance the energy of the grid by being amplifiers. Pointing the quartz toward your master crystal directs the energy toward the focal point, amplifying your intention.
The master crystal is also called a generator and is commonly a crystal tower, obelisk, or pyramid, but if you have a larger crystal to fit your intention, that will work too. Another idea could be if you are creating a grid for love, you could use a rose quartz that is shaped like a heart for your generator.
How to Build Your Own Crystal Grid
A crystal grid is really just another type of spell. Like with every spell, the most important part is setting your intention. You can use a petition paper and place your generator on top of it or just energetically infuse your intention into the grid as you build it.
Start by choosing the crystals that match your intention and cleansing and resetting their energy. This will assure there is no residual energy they may have picked up since the last time they were cleansed.
Find something to set them up on. This could be a round table or a round plate depending on how large your grid will be. A common choice is a mat with sacred geometry where you place the crystals on the intersecting lines. Use what you have and what feels right to you.
Begin building your grid by choosing a generator to place in the center. This will be the focal point of your grid and you will arrange smaller crystals around it. Start from the center and work your way outward, moving in a clockwise direction if you want to bring something into your life, or counterclockwise if you are removing something.
Crystal Combination Ideas for Gridding
You don’t need to limit yourself to only crystals! Herbs and other pieces of nature have meanings that may match your intention. Get creative by incorporating pinecones, acorns, seashells, leaves, flower petals, and more.
Not sure what crystal combinations to use for your grid? The possibilities are endless. Start by using what you already have. Here are a few pairings to get you started:
- Love: Emerald, Rhodonite, Rose Quartz
- Creativity: Apatite, Carnelian, Sodalite
- Abundance: Pyrite, Citrine, Green Aventurine
- Intuition: Amethyst, Angelite, Lepidolite
- Protection: Black Tourmaline, Smoky Quartz, Tiger’s Eye
Activating and Deactivating Crystal Grids
Once your crystal grid is arranged in a way that is satisfactory to you, there are a few different ways you can activate your grid. The most common is using a double-sided quartz point as a conductor for your energy. Or you could simply use your own finger, visualizing the intention as a light from your fingertips. Tap the generator, then tap the outermost crystal, then back to the generator, then the next crystal, working your way inward. This aligns the grid to your intention and energetically connects them to the generator. Move in the same direction around the circle as you set them up, clockwise for bringing something in, counterclockwise for moving it out.
Now leave it alone and let it work! Some people like to recharge their grid with their intentions whenever the energy starts to feel weak. If a child or pet (or an unaware guest) touches your grid, you may want to cleanse it and reactivate it. Otherwise, when the crystal grid is done working its magick, you can go ahead and deactivate your grid. This is simply doing everything you did to activate it but in reverse. When you finish, cleanse each crystal of the energy you charged it with for the purpose of your crystal grid so it can be used for other purposes.
